Board of Directors

A Board of Directors governs the non-profit Independent Adoption Center (IAC). The Board ensures the organization remains true to its mission and is fiscally sound. The following people have generously volunteered their time and skills to serve on the IAC Board:


Salvador Acevedo
, a multicultural marketing consultant, is the father of two girls adopted through IAC. Being bilingual and bicultural, he uses his expertise in building bridges of communication among different communities. He is chairman of the Latin American Film Society's Board and he has served on the IAC Board since November 2005.


Daniel Mayfield
is an attorney in San Jose, California.  In addition to his work for open adoption he is a partner in a criminal and civil law practice, Carpenter and Mayfield. Mr. Mayfield has been on the Board since 1995, and is active in other civic and non-profit groups in the San Jose area.


Camille King
is the mother of one child adopted through the IAC. Presently, Camille is a stay-at-home mom; prior to this, she practiced family law. Camille has served on the Board since 2006.


Greg Kuhl, President,
is a commercial real estate broker. He has two children adopted through the IAC. He has served on the Board since 1986.


Tahir Sheikh, Vice President,
manages the IT Customer Support & Service department of a high tech company, and is the father of four children. In addition to his technical background, Tahir has extensive experience in Finance & Accounting. He has served on the Board since June 1996, shortly after he completed a temporary accounting assignment and felt compelled to stay involved with and support the Open Adoption model.


Susan Sparling
is a university academic advising and academic services department director who has dedicated her career to assisting first-generation, low-income college students to excel at the university level. She also designs high-quality co-curricular programs that support academic success in higher education. She is a mother of three children, two of whom were born via open adoption with the expert guidance of the IAC. Susan has participated on the IAC Board since 2002, and is highly committed to support within the adoption community and national issues of open adoption.
