According to research done by the National Institute of Health and published in August 2008 in the Journal of Family Psychology families in open adoptions had more long-term contact with birth families than even researchers expected.

Furthermore, there are three longitudinal studies of families in closed/semi-closed/ and open adoptions. The children are now in their teens. Most of the adoptive families who are in open adoptions are still in contact with their birth families. You can see a summary of this research in the July, August, September 2010 IAC newsletter: http://www.adoptionhelp.org/news/newsletter.html
