What makes a family? Love! We are Ali, Malcolm and Ruby from Somers, New York, and we have a lot of love to give! We can only imagine the strength it takes to consider open adoption, and admire you for it. We are looking forward to getting to know you better and hope this website gives you a window into our lives. We can't wait to begin this journey together. Sometimes fate needs a little help from the Internet! We met when Ali answered Malcolm’s online personals ad. It turned out we had been living only two blocks from each other for over 10 years, and had never met! From our first dates of Thai food and bowling, we quickly began creating a life together. We were married at a lighthouse by Malcolm’s father, an Episcopal priest, and a year later welcomed Ruby Leilani into our lives. Parenting is amazing, and we’re excited to grow our family through open adoption. Our children will be raised knowing that teaching and learning happen inside and outside of school. Lifelong learning and curiosity about the world is important to us, as is being socially aware and contributing to the community. We believe in working hard, doing what you believe in, enjoying life and being a good person.
ALI, by MALCOLM
Ali is compassionate, intelligent, and outgoing. She has a motherly instinct, viewing life as a big science experiment full of discovery and learning. Ali loves cooking, and not only because she loves good food, but because of the joy it brings others and how it brings people together. A former 6th grade teacher, Ali uses her passion for cooking and education to teach school children about healthy eating. She works part-time from home, so she can be a stay-at-home mom, and she’s excited to do the same with our next child. She loves being able to attend music classes and library time, but more importantly, that she can be there for our children's achievements as well as disappointments, providing a cozy lap and an ear to listen.
MALCOLM, by ALI
Malcolm is my best friend. He is smart, funny, a reader, and lover of the outdoors. Respect and tolerance are very important and these values come out in everything he does. Malcolm is an Assistant Principal at a public school in New York City. He is incredibly dedicated to the students and teachers, and especially loves talking about baseball and books with his 5th graders. He is a hands-on father and husband, and no matter how busy his day, he’ll be home to read to our children and put them to bed. Our chef on pizza night, Malcolm is excited to have a new helper in the kitchen!
OUR HOME & FAMILY
We recently moved from New York City to Somers, a nearby suburb. We have woods for exploring and Malcolm can’t wait to teach our children how to throw a Frisbee in the yard. On Sundays, we visit the local farm to buy vegetables, eat a pickle-on-a-stick and see the cows, horses, and chickens. The city is an hour away and we often visit to experience the diversity of food, cultures, and people. Our children will love the butterfly room and dinosaurs at the Museum of Natural History, and Ruby is excited to teach her little brother or sister how to drive the bus at the Children’s Museum. We look forward to our summer camping trips, where we visit the National Parks and explore a new area of the country. Mommy will hike with our little one snug against her chest while Ruby rides in Daddy’s backpack. We also love baseball and look forward to bringing our child to their first game! Ruby is ready to share her Yankee t-shirt! Cooking and eating are another way we connect as a family. Our children will shuck corn and pick basil from the garden, knowing that the dinner table is a place to ask questions, get encouragement, and learn about themselves and the world. We’re lucky to have Ali’s parents close by. Grammie and Grampy love babysitting and can’t wait for another grandchild to push on the swings at the dinosaur playground. We see Ali’s sister in Rhode Island often, spending summers and holidays with Grammie and Grampie on Martha’s Vineyard. Cousins Timmy and Annie are excited to build a beach fort and teach our little one how to eat a lobster. Ali’s oldest sister has passed away but we keep her memory alive. Her daughter, Marguerite is an important part of our life and looks forward to babysitting her new cousin when she’s home from college in California. Malcolm’s brother and sister live nearby and we love spending Christmas and 4th of July at Mum-Mum and Pop-Pop’s house on Cape Cod. With six cousins plus four dogs, there’s a lot of noisy fun when we’re together! Uncle Drew and the cousins will love taking our little one on their first canoe ride on Hinckley’s Pond! Our families can’t wait to welcome another child!
