About us and our community
We’ve always envisioned our future with children, and this is part of what drew us to each other when we met fourteen years ago in graduate school. Being parents has reaffirmed our desire to share the comfort, stability, and love of our family with a new little one. Our hearts have grown in ways we could never have imagined since the birth of our daughter, as the pitter-patter of little feet down the hall turned into chasing waves at the beach, and as baby laughs in the nursery turned into stories of princesses and super heroes. Open adoption has brought us a lifetime of possibilities, and has given us and our daughter’s birthfamily the reassurance, confidence, and joy of knowing we will always be connected. We believe adoption is about building relationships and family and we want your child to know your courage, love, and interests at whatever level is comfortable for you. We live in the suburban community of Irvine in Southern California near the university where Doug teaches. Our neighborhood is a great place for kids and families, with excellent schools and beautiful parks. We live a short walk or bike ride from playgrounds and swimming pools, and often go hiking on nearby trails. We like strolling through the farmer’s market for fresh fruit and vegetables before stopping for burgers and fries. On warmer days, we are often setting up a picnic at the beach or sporting our Mickey Mouse ears at nearby Disneyland!
Philip grew up in Southern California and has many fond memories filled with laughter and fun, playing cards and tennis with his family. They live close by and are ready to baby sit and pamper our newest family member. He is an urban planner who helps improve our transportation and air quality. He’ll be able to take time off when our new son or daughter is born, and has a flexible work schedule that allows him long weekends at home. When he isn’t cleaning or organizing around the house, Philip can be found with Dottie playing frisbee, drawing, or painting. He enjoys making cheesecake and ice cream, and can’t wait to spend weekend mornings with our new son or daughter baking cookies and cupcakes.
Doug is from a small East Texas town and grew up camping, fishing and building forts and was a competitive gymnast. We visit his parents, older sister, niece, and nephew in Texas every year. Doug is a professor who loves teaching and research about how to make cities healthier places to live. His flexible teaching schedule will allow him to stay home part-time with a newborn. Doug always has a creative project in the works, whether it’s designing his aloe and succulent garden, trying out new recipes, or organizing old family photos and letters. He’s the chef in the family, a talent he’s developed since he made (and ate!) mud pies as a boy. Doug’s a good listener and can be very silly and playful around children and our beagles.
Exploration and appreciation
We love to travel, whether it’s road trips up the California coast to hike through Redwood forests, exploring ancient Native American ruins in New Mexico, or visiting museums and Central Park in New York. We volunteer with a local group of families and have helped others by picking vegetables for our local food bank, packing welcome bags at a local homeless shelter, planting flowers at a senior facility, and picking up trash on the beach. We look forward to sharing these adventures with our children—as we learn together the importance of respect, compassion, and hard work—and to rediscovering the world through their eyes. We believe in encouraging our children to explore and appreciate the world around them, and fostering a strong and positive sense of self and an appreciation of difference. Our second child will experience many different cultures and will know the strengths of his or her heritage. We will always take the time to recognize and foster our children’s talents as they emerge.
