Susan's Story: Given a Chance to Pursue My Goals

At age sixteen, the last thing on my mind was becoming pregnant and facing decisions like adoption. However, when it happened to me I knew right away that it would not have been possible for me to provide the home that a child deserves. And I was not willing to make it my parents' responsibility.

I was getting ready to begin my senior year of high school and was looking forward to going away to college the following year. The birthfather and I had just decided to go our separate ways after several years of dating, and suddenly it was if we were being forced back together.

After long talks and a little searching, we decided on open adoption and the Independent Adoption Center. We were both very young, but chose not to tell our parents and families. The counselors at the Center were very supportive.

With only a few weeks left in my pregnancy we, immediately began our search for adoptive parents. After reading many letters, we finally decided on a couple and arranged to meet with them a few days later for our match meeting. During the first few minutes of that meeting, a very peaceful feeling came over me, and I knew that they would be wonderful parents.

A little more than a week later, Sean was born. Kathryn and Jacques were both present outside of the delivery room and Sean was handed to them by his birthfather.

Since Sean's birth, we have become extremely close friends with Kathryn and Jacques. With good communication we have developed a relationship built on trust and love. There have been many visits and special days spent together. I have never regretted my decision. I know in my heart that Sean is in a wonderful home, where he will be unconditionally loved. The whole experience has taught me that being a parent is never anything that should be taken for granted. I will always be thankful to them for their kindness and willingness to share.

Someday when I have a family of my own, I hope that we will still make time for our visits and special days together, so that Sean will have the opportunity to know his birth family.
