Katharine's Story: I'm So Thankful for Open Adoption

I was sixteen years old when I became pregnant. I was blessed to have one of the best situations in open adoption history (at least in my eyes). The father, Paul, and I knew we couldn't give our wonderful baby everything she needed or wanted. It was a long, hard decision, but we have all been blessed abundantly.

Kelsey was born at 6:02 p.m. after an exceptionally smooth labor. She was loved and visited by all of Paul's, as well as by my family and friends. The adoptive parents arrived later that night and as soon as they took their first look at her, I knew this was right. It was the hardest thing we've ever done. Probably the hardest thing we'll ever do.

I will always have a deep love for Paul, Kelsey, and the adoptive parents, Kirby and Gwen. We are all so happy and very close. We talk weekly and visit often. I am so thankful for open adoption. I thank God everyday that He showed me this option, because it eases me to know that Kelsey will know I love her, and she'll know me as a person—as her birthmother.
