Laurie's Story: I Knew I Made the Right Decision

My name is Laurie and I am nineteen years old. I first found out I was four months pregnant when I was eighteen. Richard, the birthfather, was not around during the pregnancy. We had broken up when I first became pregnant.

I met David, my boyfriend, when I was three months along. Though most guys would have left, especially if the child was not theirs, he stuck by me throughout the pregnancy and gave me the support I needed. My mother and stepfather were also a source of great emotional support for me.

I first heard of the Independent Adoption Center through a class I took in high school. When I went in for my appointment with a counselor, she gave me a stack of letters from prospective adoptive couples for me to look through. When I had picked out a couple, I gave them to my mom without telling her who I'd chosen. She ended up picking the exact same couple! That made me feel even more confident about my choice.

On our first meeting with the couple, Ron and Mary, I knew in my heart they were the couple to raise my child. I didn't have a steady enough job to raise a child. They could give my child the love and stability he deserves.

On October 15, 1989, at 6:14 a.m., Justin was born. When I saw the look on Ron's and Mary's faces as Justin was born, I knew I had made the right decision for all of us.

I still visit him once a month and David and I are still together. We plan on getting married and having children of our own one day.

I hope this letter will help in making the right decision for you and your child. We love Justin very much and always will. I knew I couldn't give him all that he deserves. I'm glad that Ron and Mary can do that for me - just as long as he knows that I love him. Because of open adoption, I know he always will.
