Can a married couple (not legally though, just in eyes of God) adopt?

The answer to this question depends on what state you live in. In California and New York, unmarried partners are allowed to adopt as a couple. However, this is not the case in many other states. Note that after the adoption finalized both partners would be legal parents, able to petition a court for custody or visitation rights.
