When did open adoption first start becoming used? I'm doing a paper on open vs closed adoption and I was needing the open adoption date.

Open adoption came into widespread practice in 1982 when the Independent Adoption Center opened its doors in California. At first it was extremely controversial, with several adoption professionals refusing to even share a panel stage with speakers on open adoption. Thankfully this trend has completely reversed, and open adoption is now the norm instead of the exception.

1982 is also the year "Dear Birthmother", by Kathleen Silber and Phylis Speedlin was first published, which is the first book to discuss open adoption practice in length. You can read more about this history on our open adoption history page.
