Why do you collect the majority of the fees at the initiation of the process, versus at the time of placement?
The reason IAC and other agencies and adoption attorneys charge most of their fees up front is that clients do not pay to get a baby, which is illegal. They are paying for adoption services.
In adoption, most of the services are provided up front, these include the home study, development of a hard copy letter and online profile, education, counseling, and outreach to potential birthparents.
IAC charges another fee when families start talking to a birthparent whether or not they match so we can provide assessment, counseling and match services. We only charge this fee once, no matter how many matches a family might have.
Finally, our last fee is at placement when we provide services for termination of birthparent rights, post-placement supervision, and court report for finalization.
